Fires, Earthquakes, Disasters: Are You Prepared?

Aug 11th, 2011 by Cindy

I’ve been in 2 mandatory evacuations.  Experience tells me that there’s nothing like being prepared. Though we can’t always project the outcome, we can be prepared for an emergency.

Here are some essentials to have on hand now:

  • Emergency crank radio with cell phone charger
  • Flashlights in every room
  • Candles
  • All size batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, etc.)
  • A case or two of bottled water
  • Protein crackers, powerbars, turkey jerky etc.
  • A propane camping burner
  • Trimline Telephone - this phone does not require electricity. Like the ‘olden’ days, the phone wire plugs right into the wall - and in the event that you can’t get cell reception and the phone lines are operating, this is a very affordable option.
  • Emergency kit (Click for more info on what items should be in the kit.)

I’m an organizer, that’s true. However, until I was forced to vacate my property, I had no idea what was in store for me. I learned that day what it meant to be prepared. CLICK HERE for a list of suggested personal items to have ready to go in an emergency situation.

In the recent July Santa Barbara GAP fire, the entire city was dark. If you didn’t have a flashlight, you probably had a difficult time since we had hours of nightly power outages. By now, you probably know if you were prepared or not.

Great info Cindy, Robin and I scanned EVERYTHING onto a USB Thumbdrive with password encryption. Pictures, drivers permits and certificates. I scanned all of my keys(a REAL locksmith should be able to copy the cuts from a full size picture)and the tiny tags on my wireless button devices tons of tiny, pertinent writing there. I upgrade it at least once a year both hardware and data wise.

I got much of my info on what to bring from webbing the moanings of what Katrina victims missed the most. we have a 3 day barrel to bring with us to the shelter(thouhgt a lot about grandkids an Mom when i made it.

Bugout bags under the sides of our beds( we both sleep mostly naked) and 20 bucks and change , some sensible shoes, a t shirt, a pair of sweats(mine are synthetic material sprayed with NIK_WAX), waterproof windbreaker, work gloves(this stuff should have a strong gore tex component for us up here in the northwest), Maglite with plenty of spares, Knife or leatherman, copies of house and car keys, a small-but well thought - out first aid tin, a flattened roll of TP, a couple of glowsticks and mine has the thumbdrive and a non-metallic gas shutoff tool, gives me some peace of mind if I have to go diving out my bedroom window some night. This also gets a yearly upgrade
